The light from a candle projects an image of a candle onto the wall through two steel cut-outs representing a candle and a flame.  As the actual candle slowly melts, the weight that is lost causes the flame cut-out to descend over the candle cut-out, creating an exact parallel between the actual melting candle and its projected image.
